National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new reform that will deliver a national system of disability support that focuses on the individual needs and personal choices of people with a disability.
The NDIS will provide people with a disability support to live life their own way, to achieve their own goals and to participate in social activities of their choice.
The NDIS will roll out across the whole of NSW by 2018.
NDIS is currently being trialled in the Hunter region for the last 18 months and has recently spread out to include Lake Macquarie, Maitland and very recently the Blue Mountains.
NDIS will not yet encompass those who live in the Mid North Coast until 2017-2018.
Community groups who were previously funded to provide services for those with a disability will have their funding and services cut as the transition to NDISoccurs.
The State will recoup these funds and transfer the funding to NDIS scheme.
Clients with a disability will then contact NDIS to be assessed and if eligible will be allocated funds to self-manage their own needs.
